Wood & Finish Guide

Every piece we sell is finished by hand in our East Tennessee workshop, one order at a time. You pick the color. We sand, stain or paint, and seal your piece, then inspect it before it ships. Here is everything you need to choose with confidence.

How our finishes work

We use Minwax penetrating stains, the standard trusted by furniture makers for generations. Stain soaks into the wood rather than sitting on top of it, so the grain stays visible and the color becomes part of the piece. Every stained piece is sealed with a durable clear topcoat that protects against daily life: wet boots, dropped keys, and dog leashes included.

Light and natural

  • Natural 209. The wood, as it is. A clear, warm finish that lets the grain do the talking.
  • Pickled Oak 260. A soft whitewash with a coastal feel. Bright without being stark.
  • Golden Oak 210B. The classic honey-gold tone. Warm, familiar, and timeless.

Warm browns

  • Early American 230. A medium brown with reddish warmth. One of the most loved stain colors in America for a reason.
  • Special Walnut 224. A rich, even brown that flatters nearly any room. Minwax's 2026 Color of the Year.
  • Provincial 211. A deeper neutral brown with a slight gray undertone. The farmhouse favorite.
  • Gunstock 231. Warm amber with a hint of red. Glows in the afternoon light.

Grays and weathered

  • Weathered Oak 270. A driftwood gray-brown that looks gently sunbleached.
  • Classic Gray 271. A true soft gray that keeps the grain visible.

Darks

  • Dark Walnut 2716. Deep chocolate brown. Rich, grounded, and dramatic.
  • Jacobean 2750. A dark brown with cooler undertones, just shy of espresso.
  • Ebony 2718. Nearly black, with the grain still whispering through. Made for modern spaces.

Painted: your color, exactly

Want a painted piece instead? Choose "Painted: Custom Color" on any product and add your paint color code (any major brand) in the order notes at checkout. We will confirm the exact color with you before your build begins, then prime, paint, and seal your piece by hand.

A note on natural variation

Wood is not a printed material. Grain, mineral streaks, and how each board drinks in stain make every piece one of a kind. Your finish will closely match the color you chose, and it will also be unmistakably yours. We consider that the whole point.
